HISTORY THROUGH THE ARTS
BACKSTAGE with SOJOURNER'S TRUTH
A Compelling Re-telling of History Through the Arts
In this Professional Development workshop, teaching artists from Enchanted Circle Theater provide a behind the scenes view into SOJOURNER'S TRUTH: “I will shake every place I go to" as a dynamic, arts integrated, teaching tool.
Integrating theater arts and history interspersed with performed scenes from Sojourner’s Truth, this workshop offers participants the opportunity to explore techniques for working with primary and secondary source documents in their classrooms as a way to investigate a period or event in history. Participants will write Dialogue Poems based on historic speeches, and explore directorial choices in staging dramatic reenactments with students.
The workshop ends with a review of ECT’s sample assessment tools and rubrics designed to understand and measure content, levels of engagement, and student’s cooperative learning skills developed through the arts. Participants leave this workshop with a packet of resources for transferable classroom application.
“I loved the exploration aspect of this PD program. I now understand why we should incorporate the arts -- and how I can do it everyday. We were actively participating, thinking, inventing, and creating connections to our curriculum units together as a group. I am taking back powerful learning ideas and activities that I will use in my classroom tomorrow! ~ 5th grade teacher, Jackson Street School, Northampton
"Thank you for your unflagging concentration on using arts to experience history. Your leadership has brought innovative, significant integration of the arts into the lives of thousands of children. ECT workshops have inspired many teachers to develop classroom experiences that, in turn, inspire our students."
