CONGA-Phonics:
An Integrative Arts Curriculum for Teaching Early Reading Skills
CONGA-phonics is an innovative new curriculum for teaching early reading skills to young children. It infuses basic phonics principals and phonemic awareness with literacy-based, integrative arts activities.
Created by Priscilla Kane Hellweg and Tracy Vernon, education specialists at ENCHANTED CIRCLE THEATER, this program is designed to develop a child’s ear for language, using a multi-layered concept of repetition and engagement. The program incorporates theories of early child development and styles of learning, developmental reading assessment, multiple intelligence theory, responsive classroom techniques, and multicultural education, into creative movement, music, drama and visual arts explorations.
The program has five units of study, based on the five levels of phonemic awareness. Each unit has specifically chosen storybooks and poem collections, called Literary Umbrellas. Each Literary Umbrella has a progressive sequence of arts integration activities that follow. The activities are self-contained, and state the desired learnings, scope and sequence, and materials needed. Each activity is based on the previous one, building on a foundation of skills. The Literary Umbrellas culminate in a final synthesis project, which integrates the social and academic learning skills being developed.
This workshop is also available as a Professional Development series for Early Childhood Educators.
